Even the squirrels like to dance in DC! I was in the park last Friday near Union Station, and saw these two squirrels acting like cute little kittens, rolling in the grass, chasing each other, playing hide and seek, jumping around and acting silly! I got right up close and turned on my camera, got it all on tape...

I thought the sirens in the background offered a fitting tone to what was actually going on here. What we were actually witnessing here was the prelude to the often vicious territorial ritual of the Urban Eastern Gray Squirrel. I know it is sad to think that these cute little fur balls would have any malicious thoughts but this "dance" is a test to se which squirrel has the most stamina and strength, as the day turns to night the ritual becomes more sinister and one squirrel will often push the other of branches and such, in the end only one combatant can walk away with all the nuts. Nature is not always pretty. Having said that, If you want to continue to believe that these two malicious animals were just having fun then go ahead and delude yourself, as for me I know the awful truth as I was once caught in the middle of such an event, I'm sorry I can't talk anymore about this. Have a good night all.
